Hip Hop is not a linear or simple story. It is layered, interconnected, complex, political, and constantly evolving. The challenge was to boil down decades of history, artists, albums, cultural shifts and turn them into something clear, visual, and engaging. I wanted to create a piece that honored the complexity of the genre while still feeling accessible to someone who might not know much about it. My goal was to create a visual narrative that felt rhythmic and energetic, much like the music itself. I used color, typography, and layout to guide the viewer through time while highlighting the relationships between artists and movements. Using the vinyl record as a simple of the music during this time.
The final piece is a timeline that blends structure with flow. It shows how the genre grew, how artists influenced one another, and how West Coast Hip Hop became a cultural force.
