Information Design
The Evolution of West Coast Hip Hop - Case Study
Overview:
This project was created for my Information Design course in Spring 2018. The assignment was simple in theory but wide open in practice. Choose a cycle, an evolution, or a history, and bring it to life visually. I chose the development and influence of West Coast Hip Hop, a genre with a rich cultural story and a long timeline of artists, movements, and moments that shaped music far beyond the West Coast.
The Challenge:
Hip Hop is not a linear or simple story. It is layered, interconnected, complex, political, and constantly evolving. The challenge was to boil down decades of history, artists, albums, cultural shifts and turn them into something clear, visual, and engaging. I wanted to create a piece that honored the complexity of the genre while still feeling accessible to someone who might not know much about it.
Research and Discovery:
I began by mapping out the major eras of West Coast Hip Hop. Early pioneers. The rise of gangsta rap. The influence of collectives and labels. The shift into the two thousands and beyond. I studied artists, album, cultural moments, and the social and political context that shaped the music.
As I gathered information, patterns started to emerge. Certain artists acted as bridges between eras and one artist, Dr Dre, began to reveal himself as the clear connection amongst them all. Certain albums shifted the direction of the genre. Certain cities became creative centers. These connections became the backbone of the visual system.
Design Approach:
My goal was to create a visual narrative that felt rhythmic and energetic, much like the music itself. I used color, typography, and layout to guide the viewer through time while highlighting the relationships between artists and movements. Using the vinyl record as a simple of the music during this time.
The final piece is a timeline that blends structure with flow. It shows how the genre grew, how artists influenced one another, and how West Coast Hip Hop became a cultural force.

Personal Reflection:
This project taught me how to take a massive amount of information and shape it into something meaningful and respectful to a culture with such in depth history.
It reminded me that design is not just about visuals. It is about storytelling, context, and clarity. I loved diving into a subject with so much history and finding a way to honor it through visual design.
